Charity Goal: Participants engaging in a lively soccer match to raise funds for TOUCH.
It all started with a group of avid soccer players from TEAM VIVA comprising Chinese national scholars from Raffles Junior College (RJC) who wanted to do something meaningful for the community. Tapping on the World Cup Fever in July 2006, they initiated a project under the Citibank-YMCA Youth For Causes Programme to organise a charity soccer tournament to raise funds for the intellectually disabled from TOUCH Ubi Hostel.
Well attended by 300 participants and audience, and supported by 50 student volunteers, the event at RJC also included performances by the students, a bazaar and cyber-gaming station. There was even a music dedication corner for the public to announce their message to their friends or family members. The Silent Strikers from TOUCH Silent Club were also invited for a friendly match. Said Zhou Yue, Secretary of TEAM VIVA, “The optimism and determination of the Deaf players has caused me to realise that we must do our best to help the physically disabled lead independent lives.”
Also tapping on sports, a group of students from Choa Chu Kang Secondary organised a Walk-A-Jog event held at West Coast Park on 22 July, raising $3,000 for TOUCH.
